Overview The TDOT Traffic Design Division sets the vision and strategic direction for the uniform application of traffic engineering principles and practices to improve traffic safety and mobility for the State of Tennessee.
The Division serves on both national and internal TDOT committees to enhance the support and expertise they provide in the areas of traffic modeling, signing, pavement markings, signalization, highway lighting, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and System Engineering Analysis, managed lane systems, and emerging traffic technologies.
This Division is responsible for the development of work zone traffic control standards, policies, and procedures to be applied statewide by designers, maintenance crews, contractors, municipalities, utilities, and private consultants.
The Traffic Design Division is also responsible for the audit, assessment, design, and implementation of the Highway Safety Improvement Program.
The Traffic Design Division provides traffic engineering legal support for TDOT as part of the State Traffic Engineer role.
The Division will explore and implement innovation that will increase safety and reduce congestion, through the collaboration and development of traffic design policies, standard drawings, manuals, and procedures used by the Department.
The Traffic Design Division will deliver traffic solutions that include managed lanes and emerging technologies to maximize the use of existing resources needed to produce the Department's Work Program.
The TDOT Traffic Design Director serves as a liaison between the Assistant Chief of Engineering and the Region traffic offices regarding traffic design policies and standards.
The Division collaborates and supports the strategic direction and goals of the Department to achieve targeted investment expenditures and performance goals that meet or exceed the expected life cycle targets set for the DOT's infrastructure assets.
Essential Job Duties Manages the overall leadership and direction for TDOT's statewide Traffic Design disciplines Monitors state and federal legislation that affects TDOT Traffic Design processes Provides leadership and policy-level direction for regional traffic design leads in a matrix structure Mentors staff in the areas of leadership, professional conduct, emotional intelligence, and teamwork Leads efforts to develop performance metrics around improving safety and primary traffic design tenants of scope, schedule, budget, and quality Leads the Division in exploration and implementation of emerging technologies that improve efficiency, effectiveness, reliability, and safety of TDOT's transportation network Builds relationships between TDOT and local agencies to resolve questions about engineering and roadway safety Maintains and provides guidance for TDOT Traffic Design policies, manuals, and procedures Creates a culture of accomplishment by communicating expectations, assisting employees in establishing measurable goals, providing timely feedback, and training, ensuring the necessary tools required for the employee to achieve their goals are available, and celebrating the achievement of goals with the employee Qualifications Education and
Experience:
1.
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering 2.
10 years of demonstrated competency in traffic engineering including at least 2 years of management experience and 2 years supervising staff.
3.
Licensed PE in Civil Engineering 4.
Certified Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) preferred.
