Initial position will include overnight coverage (e.g., 7pm until 7 am) but may change according to the needs of the SICU service.
The Nurse Practitioner Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) works under supervision of the Managing Physician and general supervision of the Director of ICU and the Chief of Anesthesiology. The Nurse Practitioner provides clinical coverage as part of the ICU Team for patients with the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. The NP performs initial histories and physical examinations on patients, concurrence to be noted or addendum as indicated by attending physician. The NP orders laboratory tests, X-rays and other appropriate diagnostic tests and follows up with attending physician. The NP makes daily rounds with the team and independently. The NP conducts evaluations and enters progress notes in the patient's record, will also be authorized to evaluate, diagnose and implement treatment plans on patients under the supervision of Staff Attending Physician. The NP assists in the evaluation and initial management of Rapid Response Calls for surgical patients on the ward. The NP will initiate emergency duties for life-threatening situations where a physician is not immediately available. The position may entail other duties as assigned
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Active, full, current and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Professional (RN) Nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico), if the United States or the District of Columbia. A nurse who has, or has ever had, any registration(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with regulations issued by the Under Secretary for Health or designee. _In addition_ , a _nurse practitioner must be licensed_ _as a nurse practitioner,_ or otherwise recognized _as a nurse practitioner_ in a State (possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC (ACEN)or CCNE), and maintain full and __current certification as a nurse practitioner__ from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.
Note: The NP must maintain a current, full, active and unrestricted license/certification to continue employment with VA. A certificate of fitness for prescribing medications is required.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing (RN) approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC),( ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing (RN) __approved__ by the appropriate State-accrediting agency __and__ accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the __time the program was completed by the applicant__: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification and Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
Certification as a Nurse Practitioner is required
